Blood pressure is the pressure exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels. It’s actually the pressure exerted by arteries in the circulatory system. Blood pressure can further be classified as systolic and diastolic pressure. The measurement of blood pressure is the arterial pressure at a person’s inner side of upper arm. The first measurements of blood pressure in human body were blood vessels were taken by inserting a tube into an artery, a somewhat dangerous and painful method. The blood pressure monitor historically used the height of a column of mercury to reflect pressure which is known as sphygmomanometer. The blood pressure is measured by inflating the cuff around the upper arm. One end of the stethoscope is placed over an artery inside the cuff and detected by placing the other end over the ears .
The basic representation of a person’s blood pressure is expressed as systolic pressure over diastolic pressure with unit as “mmHg”(millimetres of mercury). A person’s normal blood pressure range is 90-119 mmHg(systolic) and 60-79 mmHg(diastolic).A person with blood pressure less than 90 mmHg for systolic and less than 60 mmHg for diastolic is considered as hypotension, while a person with blood pressure more than 119 mmHg for systolic and more than 79 mmHg for diastolic is considered as hypertension. Systolic pressure is the maximum pressure in the arteries, occuring at the end of the cardiac cycle while the diastolic pressure is the minimum pressure in the arteries, which occurs at the beginning of the cardiac cycle. Blood pressure may vary in different conditions such as stress,drugs,disease etc.
High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition where blood pushing against the arterial walls exert high force during pumping of heart.
