This small South Indian state is famous for its natural beauty. From the lush rolling tea plantations of the western Ghats, the massive array of national parks and wildlife parks, the world famous backwaters, acres of jungle, cascading and stunning beaches, Kerala beauty has it all.
Kerala is located in the South West of India and as a result has quite a tropical climate making it a haven for wildlife. Kerala boasts nearly 500 different bird species making it a haven for bird spotters who flock to Kerala from around the world. Kerala has almost 1000 Square Kilometers of forest meaning that the biodiversity is massive. Expect to see loads of Elephants, Tigers, Leopard and the famous Grizzled Giant Squirrel. There are approximately 23 Wildlife reserves and bird sanctuaries in India making wildlife spotting very easy.
The Kerala backwaters make up a lot of the Kerala Beauty and contain thousands of different aquatic species so on a Kerala backwater tour you can expect to see loads of Crocodiles, turtles, frogs and fish. The Kerala backwaters are not only a tourist attraction but in fact serve as a highway of vehicles allowing for transportation between the various villages that occupy the backwaters and farm the rice paddies.
The beaches of Kerala are some of the most pristine in India. It is usual to find the beaches quite deserted except for a few chilled out travellers and some resting fishermen. Kovalam is one of the most famous beaches whereas Varkala, in the South of Kerala is one of the busiest, especially amongst backpackers.
Heading East into the high Western Ghats that mark the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu and it is becomes apparent why Kerala is so famous for being one of the most beautiful places in the world. The rolling hills with seemingly endless lush green tea and spice plantations, the rich forests and the high mountains are truly stunning. Hill stations such as Munnar and Thekkady are popular travel destinations for tourists and backpackers as they offer a wide selection of activities and some spectacular scenery.
The waterfalls of Kerala are other great attractions for nature lovers. Many of Keralas’ most beautiful waterfalls are only active in the monsoon but there are plenty of others open in the winter. Valara falls close to the town of Adimali in Idukki are one of the biggest falls in India and are a popular tourist destinations.
